A note or warning to those searching for a portrait artist.
Some portrait artists these days use a technique where they print your photographed portrait onto a canvas. This technique has become quite popular within the artist community. Printing of this sort has become quite inexpensive with the development of “giclee” or digital printing. They then use paint to give texture and the appearance of an original painted portrait. The more successful artists who use this technique take an assembly line approach using other craftsman to complete their product. This often times means that your portrait is not even painted by the artist you commissioned to do it.
Other “artists” are nothing more than salesmen that take your order and then commission a sweat shop artist in China or a third world country to create your piece. This business will only gain in popularity due to trade agreements that span worldwide.
The portrait you commission me to paint is first drawn onto a primed surface of your choice. I then use artist quality oil paint to apply layer upon layer to build a sculpted/three dimensional appearance of you or your loved one. This is all done by my hand personally. I take great pride and care in the fact that you have commissioned ME.
It comes down to what exactly you are looking to purchase. The traditional “from scratch” technique that I apply has been tried and tested for centuries. We know through experience that oil paintings last and gain value with time and the events of the artist’s career.
The two techniques I have mentioned above afford an artist an inexpensive alternative to creating your portrait and sometimes their pricing reflects this. However the giclee technique is not tested and is not “from scratch” therefore may not endure. Sweat shop artist’s are used for their skill without personal gain and therefore do not have opportunities to create a name for themselves.
When you see an advertisement for portraits painted at dirt cheap prices, just remember the old saying “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is”.

The smallest canvas I will paint on is 16 x 20. Based on the type of portrait determines the size of the canvas. I prefer to meet the person, but in some cases this is not possible, so I will work from a photograph alone. I reserve the right to request another photo be taken if the quality is less than professional. For example, I will not work from a snap shot. (home photo's lack the appropriate lighting and detail needed for an oil portrait) Photo's need to be 8 x 10, I will work with a 5x7 if that is all you have.
